City of Noblesville, Indiana 46060
HISTORY OF NOBLESVILLE
Noblesville was purchased from the Indians in 1818 by William Conner, the only white man living in the area at the time. He and his wife, a Delaware Indian, lived in the first log cabin in the area and opened central Indiana’s first trading post in 1802. Conner’s home is beautifully preserved in a village of historic buildings at Conner Prairie Pioneer Settlement, a living history museum just south of Noblesville. This site is where many important decisions were made for the state. William Conner and Josiah Polk laid out the town of Noblesville in 1823 and was designated as the County Seat of Noblesville in 1824 and incorporated in 1851. Noblesville was named either for James Noble, a state senator or Lavinia Noble of of Indianapolis, to whom Josiah Polk was engaged. The Peru and Indianapolis Railroad completed in 1851 ran through the heart of the town, strengthening the town economically and caused an increase in population. Many Victorian homes, as well as most of downtown was built during a time of great prosperity for Noblesville in 1888 when a natural gas well was discovered near 11th and Pleasant Streets.
Noblesville’s rich history is beautifully preserved by its community and has recently been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The majestic French Renaissance structure, served as the courthouse from 1878 to 1992 and still serves as home to administrative offices of the local government. The Sheriff’s Residence and Jail, originally built in 1875 now serves as the Hamilton County Museum of History. Charles Manson and D.C. Stephenson, Grand Dragon of the Ku-Klux Klan were a few famous prisoners jailed during its time.
